Embed & Spread: 3 filmmaking tips

From Here to Awesome is an experiment and a discussion as much as it is a discovery and distribution festival. Over the coming months we will be sharing a collection of educational content in the form of virtual panels, how-to’s, and tutorials. We’re looking for filmmakers who would like to share their experiences. If you’d like to help organize a virtual panel, share a tutorial and/or a how-to, we’d love to distribute it through the festival. All the educational content is produced under a creative commons license and open distribution is encouraged. Off to a good start

In the week or so since we opened the call for submissions we’ve been flooded with film registrations and emails. Look for more submissions over the next few days as we finalize the filmmaker registration / submission backend of the site. In the meantime for those that have created a submission video and have it ready drop us an email with your submission details. And make sure to check out the submission steps.

There are FHTA folks on the ground in Park City for the Sundance and Slamdance festivals. Big thanks to indiegogo, indieflix, Brian Chirls (FHTA head of theatrical - who is also video blogging for filmmaker mag) and a host of others filmmakers and festival goers who are helping to spread the word. Your efforts appear to be working.

Talk on the street at Park City is that Lance Weiler (Head Trauma), Arin Crumley (Four Eyed Monsters), and M dot Strange (We Are the Strange) pioneers of alternative film distribution are reportedly cooperating in setting up a new on-line film festival called From Here To Awesome.

The festival is now said to be accepting video submissions from filmmakers who have to explain why they think their film is ‘awesome.’ Audiences can check out the submissions on MySpace, YouTube, and Current TV, casting votes on their favourites audiences can zip through the submissions and vote on their favorites. This spring, the audience top ten will get theatrical screening, be available on the internet and on portable devices.

BUZZ: From Online to At a Theater Near You

Last week Arin and myself did an interview about FHTA with NewTeeVee. If you haven’t checked out their site you should it is an excellent news site about all things dealing with online media. Its a great resource.

Hoping to bridge the gap between the independent filmmakers and a paying audience, From Here to Awesome is a new online “film festival” where indie filmmakers can post an online video pitch, drum up support from fans and win a chance at being selected for a finalist showcase in April. And unlike many festivals, submission is free.

The project is a collaboration between filmmakers Head Trauma’s Lance Weiler, We are the Strange’s M dot Strange and Four Eyed Monsters‘ Arin Crumley. All three are pioneers in using the web to promote and distribute feature films — in the video above Crumley and co-Director Susan Buice present a production and distribution case study for Monsters.

“We just wanted to break open the bottleneck that currently exists,” Weiler told me in a phone interview that included Crumley about the project last week. “Make it easier for audience members to find [films], make it easier for filmmakers to have that conversation with them.”
